AP - A federal judge is set to determine whether the suspect in the Tucson shooting rampage that killed six people and wounded several others, including then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, should remain at a federal prison facility where officials are forcibly medicating him.

VOTES (Voting Opportunities for Teenagers in Every State), a nationwide mock election project for high school students, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The project, begun in 1988 by history teachers Jim Shea and Lorrie Byrom from Northfield Mount Hermon School, includes teen voters from one public and one independent school in each state. For teenagers, nearly all of whom will be voters in the election of 2012, the project teaches the significance and the excitement of the democratic process. This year’s American election has captured the interest of people around the world and VOTES 2008 promises to be an important educational program. - Results announced: Sunday, November 2, 6:30 to 9 pm, James Gym, NMH
VOTES election results from around the country were announced by student anchors at VOTES election headquarters. The evening featured reports and interviews done by students from election headquarters. Live on-air coverage of the evening’s events played on a closed-loop television feed and on WNMH, the campus radio station. Campaign music by the NMH Singers and Jazz Band.
VOTES FUN FACTS!
- Over 50,000 teen votes are cast in each VOTES election
- Teen voters picked the winner in four of the past five elections
- 35 schools have participated in all five VOTES mock elections
- VOTES has been covered in USA Today, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor and National Public Radio
- One public and one private school from each state participate in the project each year
- John McCain's highschool is participating
- VOTES voter turnout has averaged 77 percent across the nation.
- VOTES students from Northfield Mount Hermon School have gone on to careers in national politics, polling, candidate advocacy and law
- Over the years, participating VOTES schools have been identified as some of the best high schools in the country and several have been listed on Newsweek's list of top schools as well as the Department of Education’s list of “blue ribbon” schools
